Automatic Fire Protection - Motorsport Safety Technology Benefits Taxis

Earlier this year, we were called upon to develop a rapid solution to a serious issue that had been affecting a fleet of around 1,000 taxis.

The issue in question related to a rear turbo hose in one particular model of taxi that, when fractured, blew hot gases into the bulkhead and onto sound-deadening material which, in a few incidences, caught fire and completely destroyed the vehicle.

Faced with this major problem the manufacturer contacted Lifeline and asked if we could find a solution.  Following a series of exhaustive tests, Lifeline developed, designed and manufactured an Automatic Fire Protection system to resolve the issue – in under a week.

The automatic fire protection system developed by Lifeline features a 1kg ABC dry powder extinguisher that is fully automated using the Protectowire fused detection system. This activates Lifeline’s patented self-contained compact lithium cell battery-operated firing head when a temperature of 180ºC has been registered. 

The systems for all 1,000 vehicles were supplied to the installation contractor in kit form – complete with all pipework, nozzles and drilling templates - and were successfully fitted to the entire fleet in one month. The extinguishant cylinder was neatly located out of sight of any passenger in the driver’s cab.
